Showing Up for Community: Waterline at Fittest in the Coal Fields 2025
On Saturday 6 September 2025, the Moranbah CrossFit grounds were buzzing with energy, grit, and community spirit as competitors gathered for the 2025 Fittest in the Coal Fields.Â
From seasoned CrossFitters to first-time participants, every athlete pushed their limits across challenges that tested not just strength, but also teamwork, resilience, and heart.
I had the privilege of being behind the camera as the ‘official photographer’ for the day, and even through the lens I could feel the energy. The atmosphere was electric, filled with determination, laughter, encouragement, and the kind of camaraderie that makes events like this so special. Opening the competition alongside Isaac Regional Council’s Cr Melissa Westcott was an honour, and it set the tone for what became an unforgettable day.
Why Waterline Showed Up
Waterline was proud to be this year’s major sponsor, and for us, it was about more than putting our name on an event. It was about showing up, being present, and supporting a community that gives so much back to the mining industry.
We know that physical and mental wellbeing are essential to building strong communities, and strong industries. The competition’s focus on health, connection, and resilience aligns perfectly with Waterline’s focus on building strong community connections. Even one of our own team members competed on the day, and it was incredible to see hundreds of people, athletes, families, and supporters come together to cheer each other on.

Highlights and Heartbeats
The competition was fierce, but the spirit was always friendly. Pairs pushed through tough workouts, lifted each other up, and set the bar high for 2026.
One of the standout moments was watching first-time competitors starting the competition with nerves, but leaving with smiles, new friendships, and an immense sense of achievement. That’s what this event is about: building connection, encouraging resilience, and celebrating the wins, big and small.
Special thanks to the Fittest in the Coal Fields Committee members: Damien West, Alan Slack, Ian Bailey, Jonathan Carter, Analeigh Angus, Jordan Hong, Cathryn Hoare, Rachel Blaszczak, and James Tennant, as well as the volunteers and supporters who made the day possible. Your hard work and passion created something truly memorable. Thanks also to Brendon Swan from Dad Hours who created the WODs for the day.
Looking Ahead
With Moranbah’s CrossFit box expanding, the future looks even brighter. We’re excited to see more participants join next year, and Waterline is committed to continuing our support. Because for us, this is about more than fitness. It’s about community, resilience, and connection, the very qualities that underpin both the mining industry and the people who power it.
To everyone who competed, supported, or simply showed up, thank you. You’ve inspired us. This wasn’t just a competition; it was a celebration of strength in body, in spirit, and in community.
We’ll see you again in 2026. Until then, we’ll keep asking ourselves, and you: How will you show up for your community?
