Randall Makin

Randall, Waterline’s CEO, founded the company back in 2011, with Wayne Gerard (CEO of RedEye, which Randall and Wayne also co-founded together) and leads the business from his background in electrical engineering and strong multi-disciplined approach to solve complex problems.

With his experience working in heavy industrial environments, Randall believes engineering has a responsibility to shape our communities and industries. This capacity invests heavily in developing better ways of doing engineering for our people, our clients and the communities we service, plus the duty we have to do things safely.

Advocating the value of engineering to the community is something Randall truly believes in. This philosophy is underpinned by the concept repairing, maintaining and optimising assets will have a smaller environmental impact in the long-term and make clients get the most from their assets. This is one of the ways Waterline works to their ethos: engineering with a conscience.

Randall is on the board of RedEye and enjoys seeing the growth of the now-global engineering data platform, which is also one of Queensland’s most successful start-ups.

Developing a humane, high-performing team is something Randall is focused on. He believes in giving people time and space to have a family, to be an engineer and keep fit in body and mind, is all part of a balanced life.

Most mornings at 530am he is at the box, leading his CrossFit Cult crusade!

Steve Cheyne
Co-Operations Manager

Steve is our Co-Operations Manager, with Tim, and together they run a pretty tight ship! Steve is always zipping around from meeting to meeting, wearing his name-sake ‘Big Grin’.  Additionally, he leads Waterline’s Sales and Marketing Team.

Having spent most of his career as an onsite engineer and manager in the resources industry, Steve has a solid grasp of the operational environment, statutory compliance and risk management.

Never far from the action (or a laugh), Steve is fervent about building an enduring engineering company. Part of creating this is through a nurturing work culture, which genuinely cares about staff, clients, and the communities we work and live in.

When Steve isn’t at Waterline HQ or out onsite, he’s heading out bush, to the latest isolated camping spots with his young and (sometimes very noisy) family. Ahh, the serenity.

Tim Strong
Co-Operations Manager

Joining Waterline in 2018, Tim has fast become the go-to operations man around the office and on-site. He shares the operations role with Steve and together they keep everything running smoothly and try to rein-in Randall from having too many crazy ideas!

Tim also leads the Mechanical Business Unit, Waterline’s team servicing all types of mechanical and structural engineering needs, including life of asset modelling, material handling and various improvement projects.

The majority of Tim’s career has been in senior operational roles within the resources industry. This has provided him with a thorough understanding of operational, risk management and regulatory requirements. Tim is Waterline’s number one problem solver, who loves nothing more than providing clients with solutions to make their lives safer, more efficient and productive.

With a motto of being aggressively transparent, Tim is focused on building an engineering company that is trusted and admired by clients, staff and communities alike.

When he isn’t working Tim can be found slogging it out up a hill on his two-wheel steed, lamenting his lack of match fitness.
